FFL Transfer Process

Buying a gun online can be confusing and a bit scary if you do not know what the rules of the game are.  If you are planning to purchase online we will help you through the process to make it as painless as possible.  The seller must ship your purchase to an individual or company with a FFL (Federal Firearms License).  It is illegal for them to  ship directly to a purchaser without a FFL.

Here is a quick summary of the process:

  • Arrange  to get payment to the seller.  Follow their instructions carefully.  When sending a payment, make sure to include your name, address, phone number, and the item number from GunBroker.com or any other service like that.  Many times sellers are selling many guns and if they receive payment without this information they may not know what it is for.
  • Contact us with the seller's email address and we will send a copy of our FFL to them. They must have this to ship.
  • Once the seller has payment and the Top Gun Armory FFL, they will then ship the gun to us at the address on the FFL and usually notify you of the shipping. If you get any tracking information from the seller, please forward it on to Top Gun Armory so we know when to expect your gun.
  • We will wait for your gun to arrive (so we have serial numbers, etc on the gun) and then we will contact you to come to the office and fill out the paperwork. We can submit it then and see how long it will take. If it comes back quickly we can finish the deal then. If not you can head home and when the background check clears we will call and you can pick up the gun. Background checks can take from 5 minutes to 2 hours usually, but they can take even longer if the system is loaded.
  • When you come to the office you will need to bring your "government-issued photo ID" with your current address on it. If your ID (Driver's License) does not have your current address, let me know and we can work out an alternate.

My Fees for FFL Transfers are as follows:

  • Normal Transfer Fee = $35
  • Law Enforcement/Military = $25
  • Existing Customers = $25
  • Colorado Law now also imposes a $10 fee for the background check that goes to the CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation)

SPECIAL: Place an order and pay for it a the the time of the transfer for $200 and $15 of the transfer fee will be refunded as part of that purchase.

I am also a full service FFL so if you have other purchases you would like to look into, let me know and I can see what price I can get the item for.

I am looking forward to working with you and supporting your 2nd Amendment Rights!

Notes About Buying a Gun Online

The first thing to consider is: Are you legally allowed to buy a gun? Generally speaking, if you are over the age of 18 and NOT a convicted felon, you can purchase any kind of long gun (shotguns and rifles). If you are over the age of 21 and NOT a convicted felon, you can purchase both handguns and long guns. That is generally speaking. While not usually the case, there may be additional rules specific to your state. For example, some states don't allow anyone with a domestic violence conviction (even a misdemeanor) to own a gun. It is fully your responsibility to ensure you can legally own a specific gun in your area before ordering it online. If you have questions, and are using us as the FFL transfer agent, contact us and we will help you.

Next, you should figure out what kind of gun you want and if it is legal in your area.  Knowing what you want before you start looking for a gun is important, because there are states out there that have prohibitions or restrictions on certain classes of weapons and even the size of magazines.  In other words, the purchase of some guns may be illegal where you live. For example, California only permits the sale of handguns that are on the State Attorney General's drop-test list. Some cities have complete bans on handguns, Chicago for example.  In New Jersey, the sale of an air gun is treated like the sale of a firearm!  Knowing not just what you want, but whether it is legal to buy is important. So how do you find out if the type of gun you want is legal to buy in the state you live in? And how do you know if YOU are legally able to purchase a gun?

The answers ares surprisingly easy.  Visit your local gun shop. Every gun shop is required to have an FFL or Federal Firearms License. This is a license issued by the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives), that permits a person or business to conduct the sale of guns. The rules about who can sell guns are pretty straightforward. If you are selling guns that aren't in your private collection, you're in the "business" of selling guns and you need an FFL.  An FFL can legally transfer ownership of a gun from one party to another, and that's important if you're going to be buying a gun.  Make friends with the folks at your local gun shop. They know the rules and regulations specific to the area that you're living, and they'll keep you out of trouble about what you can, or can't buy.  If you are in Colorado, feel free to contact us at Top Gun Armory and we can help you with your questions.
